Why do we Flush?
Carmichael Water District flushes
to maintain a high level of water quality in the system. Over
a period of time, iron and manganese will build up in our
distribution system. The only way to alleviate this build
up is by opening the hydrants to clean out the lines. The
Districts flushing program maintains system water quality
and uses less than 2% of the water produced each year.
What are Iron and Manganese?
Iron and manganese are naturally
occurring elements found in our groundwater. While they pose
no threat to the health and well being of our customers, they
do cause taste, odor and color complaints.

When do we Flush?
Carmichael Water District flushes
the system dependent on the system dynamics. Any time that
the district makes a change from surface water to groundwater
or vice-versa, takes a well off line or turns a different
well on, and during project or emergency shut downs the distribution
lines may be affected. At these times, you may notice a discoloration
of your water. The district schedules flushing in affected
areas on a regular basis as well as on an as needed basis.

1. |
Flush your household
during and/or after this period by opening the front hose
bib and letting the water run for several minutes or until
it clears. Next open the back hose bib and let the water
run until clear. Do not have water on inside while doing
this procedure. |

2. |
If you experience brown
water in the hot water only, flush out your hot water
heater. Most manufacturers recommend flushing the hot
water heater at least once a year. |

3. |
If you experience a
problem with brown water during a time when Carmichael
Water District is not flushing in your area, try the above
flushing procedures. If you are still experiencing a problem,
call our office at (916)483-2452 to report it. Carmichael
Water District will then schedule your area to be flushed.
